February 2018 FREE A Daily Guide to Fun on the Beach A Publication of FortMyersBeach.news page 2 SAND LIFE February 2018 February 2018 SAND LIFE page 3 Cover Artist: Kathy Summer Kathy Summer is a Florida resident who recently retired as an Information System Analyst from the Illinois Department of Transportation. She is thrilled to be able to pursue her life long interest in art, creating works in pastel, acrylic and watercolor. Kathy loves living in Paradise, painting, dancing, playing pickleball and volunteering at her church and other non-profits. She is a member of the Fort Myers Beach Art Association. Awesome Sauce! Living the Life! Awesome Sauce is the musical duo of Kat Gracie and John Kiesling. We perform some of everything, said Kat, as I am a little bit country and Johnny is a little bit rock & roll, and on the beach you have to be ready to play to the crowd. Favorite audience requests tend to be for The Eagles, Beatles and Janis Joplin, and we sneak in Dave Matthews, as Johnny is his #1 fan, but really it is whatever gets people going, because we love what we do, and our office is the beach, so we are living the life! Kat began singing as soon as I could talk, and was quickly eating, sleeping and drinking it, growing up in Detroit. When in high school, I had a teacher tell me it was time to decide what I wanted to do in life, and when I said singing, he replied I would never make it as I was horrible! I am the type that if you say that to me, I bend over backwards to prove you wrong. Sixteen college scholarships later, I think I won! John is from Pennsylvania, but has been here since 1996, Kat explained, living for years on Fort Myers Beach, but is now in Cape Coral with his wife and two children. He is a drummer and guitarist who has played with everybody and is one of the nicest guys ever, a great family man, and amazing person. I moved down with my husband four years ago, looked for a band, and joined a group with whom Johnny drummed, but about a year later, that fell apart. Johnny is also a terrific guitarist and suggested we form a duo and Awesome Sauce began three years ago. The best part is we do not have to drag a bunch of equipment around I joke you only get paid to set up, as that is such a pain, while we entertain for free, as that is such joy. Awesome Sauce plays for the past three years each Saturday at The Salty Crab from 1 to 5 p.m., the Fish House the first Sunday of the month from 1 to 4 p.m., and at Del Tura off US41 in North Fort Myers the second Friday of the month from 6 to 9 p.m. To book Awesome Sauce, visit their website AwesomeSauceBand. com or see them on Facebook at JohnnyKatAwesomeSauce. As for how they came up with their name, That is kind-of funny, laughed Kat! When my husband and I were getting married, we learned we could choose our last name, so we thought, Mr. & Mrs. Awesome Sauce, but our families vetoed that! When Johnny and I formed the duo, I suggested it because he is such an Awesome musician and I am so goofy, everyone thinks I am on the Sauce, even though neither of us drink! Everybody loves and remembers it, so it works out better than good. Gary Mooney #4 ON BEACH MAP page 4 SAND LIFE February 2018 All Month FORT MYERS BEACH COMMUNITY POOL 2600 Oak Street, FMB. Photo by Gary Mooney. Anyone who has ever visited Fort Myers Beach in-season knows that the search for a parking space can put a dent in your trip to Paradise, and if you locate one, you ll pay dearly for the privilege! Lee Tran, however, offers two options to help transport you conveniently and inexpensively around the island. LeeTran opened the Beach Park & Ride in mid-december 2017 in South Fort Myers at Summerlin Square Drive, near Summerlin and Pine Ridge Roads. Beach trolleys from there to the beach operate daily with the exception of major holidays Of Trolleys & Trams New Options to Counter Beach Traffic & Parking from roughly 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and in season until 10 p.m. The station is at a prime location, where seasonal traffic to Fort Myers Beach often backs up, enabling it to entice visitors to take the trolley as a legitimate option. It serves three primary routes: 1.) Trolleys #490 to Fort Myers Beach, connecting to #410 down to Lovers Key, 2.) #130 to the Edison Mall, and 3.) #50, to Southwest Florida International Airport. Kiosks let you know the estimated time of arrival for each, electronically as well as verbally in English and Spanish. The station has three areas to shelter patrons from the sun and rain, with water fountains, soft drink machine, restrooms, four outdoor workstations, 16 charging units for cells and tablets, 12 electric outlets, a 125-car free parking lot and security cameras, with everything ADA-accessible including the trolleys, all for a 75-cent fare! ($2/all day) Exact change needed. Trolleys can transport bicycles on their front racks. High-profile stops include Bowditch Point Park, Lynn Hall Park, Times Square, Beach Library, Santini Marina Plaza and Lovers Key State Park. The trolley is clean, and its big, wide windows offer a panoramic view, especially when facing the beach and Gulf. The on-board monitor constantly updates the time as well as the next stop, intersection and upcoming landmarks. The RIDE LEETRAN app lets users find the nearest stop and track buses. Available for iphones and Android phones. Sometime in February, LeeTran plans to initiate two free step-on Trams to service the prime visitor section of Fort Myers Beach. Trams will begin at Bowditch Point Park at the northern tip of Fort Myers Beach, pass Lynn Hall Park and Times Square and head south down Estero, before turning around near Matanzas Pass Preserve and the Beach Library. Trams will connect with the Beach Park & Ride Trolleys at Times Square and Lovers Key trolley service at Matanzas Pass Preserve, with 22 beach access stops on their routes. The open-air trams will be free to ride, rather than the 75-cent trolley charge. The two trams will replace two existing trolleys, while offering triple the seating due to their open nature over the enclosed trolleys, with two employees on each tram to ensure passenger safety. For more information, schedules, or to purchase trolley multiple day passes, call (LEE-TRAN) or see Gary Mooney Seafood Steaks Cocktails Lunch Dinner Beachside Sandwiches Share your food and drink photos with #PierSideEats piersidegrill.com Open Daily 11 a.m p.m. Next to the Public Pier page 6 SAND LIFE February 2018 CONT D FROM PG.4 THURSDAY, FEB 1 bers; $14 nonmembers.
