The organization was initially affiliated with the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) in an effort to bring greater focus to and support for Latino educational leaders and related issues. Now, more than ever, the need exists to further develop a national association focused on identifying, training and supporting school administrators, superintendents and educators of Hispanic-serving school districts. By the year 2025, Latino students will comprise 25 percent of the school-age population. In the nation s largest states California, Texas, Florida and New York Latinos have already surpassed 25 percent of the school population and in many schools have exceeded 80 percent. Addressing the needs of the largest minority group in the United States is vital to the national interest. ALAS serves as a voice for this ever-increasing population, which includes Mexican-Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans and Latin Americans. The name ALAS not only serves as the acronym for the organization, but was intentionally selected as a word in Spanish that means wings. It is our hope the Association will continue to support school system leaders so all children, Hispanic students in particular, will have the wings to become successful, contributing members of society. Our Mission To provide leadership at the national level that assures every school in America effectively serves the educational needs of all students with an emphasis on Latino youth by building capacity, promoting best practices and transforming educational institutions.
