FOR FRIENDS OF ST. VINCENT MEALS ON WHEELS FALL 2017 I VOLUME 32, NUMBER 3 3 Your holiday gift FEEDS THREE TIMES MORE seniors! With Thanksgiving coming, your help is needed to deliver holiday meals to more than 1,800 hungry shut-in L.A. seniors. Today your gift will be tripled to feed three times more seniors! A group of generous supporters will triple every dollar of your Thanksgiving contribution, up to a total of $150,000. If you haven t made your Thanksgiving donation, will you please reach out now to provide seniors with holiday meals, friendly visits and safety checks? Please go to donate.stvincentmow.org by 11/22/17 to deliver three times the number of Thanksgiving meals. INSIDE: Steve at the drums in his apartment: I live my life in faith, hope and love. CLIENT SPOTLIGHT Steve Gets an Outpouring of Love At 86, Steve radiates positive energy. This gift has served him well over the years. As a child in war-torn Budapest, he lost his vision in one eye and hearing in one ear during a bombing. Later, he saw Louie Armstrong sing Jeepers Creepers in a movie. He fell in love with jazz and America, calling jazz the sound of freedom. American jazz and swing inspired him to become a drummer and later, to escape postwar Hungary and go to America. He and his wife, a pianist, came to New York in 1957 and worked their way west across the country. Sadly, she became ill and passed away. Steve ended up in Hollywood, where he worked for decades as a The Sister Alice Marie Fund professional drummer, bandleader, and a contractor who put together bands for all occasions. He played on TV game shows, toured with big bands, and did a stint in Las Vegas. He lived his dream. He has been and continues to be an active member of L.A. s Hungarian community, Continued on page 5 FROM THE DIRECTOR Bring on the Holidays! Thanks to your ongoing support, it s already beginning to feel like the holidays in our kitchen! We re planning delicious holiday meals with added touches to make them special. Our volunteers are already making holiday gift bags for clients with donated items including socks, soap, and hand lotion. Our staff is planning our annual Living Nativity for Christmas and wondering whose baby will portray Baby Jesus....IT WOULDN T BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT YOUR LOYAL SUPPORT. And although we miss Sister Alice Marie, we honor her every day by continuing to serve our seniors with the same compassionate heart and personal touch. Speaking of our dear Sister, Meals on Wheels America has created an annual award in her honor. Starting in 2018, a Meals on Wheels leader who embodies her passion and dedication to seniors will be If You re Hungry, You re Hospitalized More the recipient of the Sister Alice Marie Quinn Award. What a fitting tribute. You ll also see in this issue that we have founded a Sister Alice Marie Fund. We want to use memorial gifts made in her name to meet the special needs of the hungry in Los Angeles, like sack lunches for homeless veterans at the VA Hospital Welcome Center. So much goodness goes on here every day, but it wouldn t be possible without your loyal support. This Thanksgiving season, I am thankful for you! Happy holidays to you and your loved ones! Daryl Twerdahl Interim Executive Director Studies show that people without regular access to healthy food have higher rates of hospitalization. This includes a lot of seniors on Social Security who struggle to get by on $889 a month, and often have to choose between rent, medications and food. Our Vincentian Values The Charity of Christ urges us to: RESPECT: Recognizing our own value and the value of others COMPASSIONATE SERVICE: Providing excellent care with gentleness and kindness SIMPLICITY: Acting with integrity, clarity and honesty ADVOCACY FOR THE POOR: Supporting those who lack resources for a healthy life and human development INVENTIVENESS TO INFINITY: Being continuously resourceful and creative A Special Tax Savings for You and SVMOW! A volunteer recently complained about having to pay taxes on the income from her IRA. It s all taxable, it bumps me into a whole new tax bracket and costs me even more tax dollars every year! What can I do? There is a solution. If you are 70-1/2 or older, you can have your IRA Trustee make a payment to support St. Vincent s critical mission directly from your IRA. This distribution, called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), is not taxed to you AND as long as the value transfer is at least equal to or greater than your required minimum distribution, you do not have to take any income out of your IRA this year. Gifts transferred directly from your IRA to SVMOW will qualify as a QCD. The bottom line is that if you do not itemize deductions on your 1040 personal income tax return, you ll come out ahead making charitable gifts this way. There are no taxes since you are not receiving the income. It is going directly to SVMOW. If you do itemize, this gift is not tax deductible, but you may still be better off. If you are 70 or older, talk to your advisors about how you might benefit. You can name several charities, so long as the gifts do not exceed $100,000 total. For more information, please contact Daryl Twerdahl at (213) or 2 I BREAD BASKET FALL 2017 The Sister Alice Marie Fund Dear Friend, We re writing to you as part of our St. Vincent Meals on Wheels family. We are both longtime supporters and volunteers who care deeply about this program. Since our beloved founder Sister Alice Marie (SAM) passed away, we ve been thinking about how to best honor her lifetime of service to L.A. s seniors. What would mean the most to the woman who often reached into her own pocket to make a client s life a little better? (She would sometimes buy clients in need window fans and mattresses, or pay the vet bill for a client s sick pet all with her own money.) SAM even had a bucket list of other ways she wanted to serve those who are hungry and isolated in our community. With many of our clients having served in WWII, she had a special concern for veterans. Then we were asked to provide daily sack lunches for 50 homeless veterans who come to the VA Hospital Welcome Center in West L.A. and it was clear what to do. So on 7/7/17, our program s 40th anniversary, we established the Sister Alice Marie Fund for all gifts made in her honor. This fund, which we hope will reach $500,000, will be used for special projects to alleviate hunger and ease suffering for seniors and others in our community starting with our lunches for homeless vets. This fund will be like SAM s pocket: a way to act quickly and directly when there is an urgent need for meals beyond our traditional home-delivery service. If you wish to honor Sister Alice Marie, will you please consider making a donation to this special fund, beyond your Circle of Angels support? Your gift of any amount will help further her life s work. You may use the enclosed envelope. Together, we ve delivered 27 million life-changing meals (and counting) to L.A. s hungry shut-ins. We hope you will join us in making sure that SAM s commitment to our homebound neighbors continues for the next 40 years. With our deepest gratitude, Gale Runnells Nelly Kilroy P.S. Please donate online at stvincentmow.org/sam-fund or use the enclosed envelope. If you wish to donate by phone, please contact Daryl Twerdahl at (213) STVINCENTMOW.ORG I 3 FROM CUISINE S PRESIDENT Volunteer to Bring Joy this Holiday Season! Volunteering makes you feel great in fact, a recent study from the University of Michigan shows volunteering can lower blood pressure and promote healthy aging! When you feel the gratitude from our clients; the smiles, the thank yous and the hugs especially over the holidays not only are you helping a senior in need, you re replenishing your body and nourishing your soul! So now that you know how good it is, what are you waiting for? Our core need is for delivery van drivers and meal delivery runners Monday through Saturday from 10am to 2pm; you can volunteer once a week, twice a month, whatever you like. Every volunteer shift saves us $56 that can be better spent on food. If that time frame doesn t fit, we have other volunteer options as well. Call Director of Volunteers Carol Martinez at (213) and we ll work it out. If your company is looking for a team-building activity, consider a volunteer team. We also welcome students seeking community service hours. I hope to see you at the kitchen or at one of our exciting holiday events very soon! Thank you for being part of the family, and for making sure no L.A. senior goes hungry this holiday season. Mamie, 87 Gifts and Grants It wouldn t be possible to meet the needs of 1,800 hungry seniors without your generous support. Although space doesn t allow us to print all donors names, every contribution is greatly appreciated and immediately put to work delivering food and love to those in need. 40 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION The Cain Foundation Daughters of Charity Foundation Mrs. Eva Elkins Mr. & Mrs. Jerry B. More than 600 generous foodies and wine-lovers attended An Evening on the Beach, hosted for the eighth year by Audi. The September event at the Jonathan Beach Club featured renowned L.A. chefs preparing dishes, and noted vintners and spirit makers sharing their wines and signature cocktails. The event benefitting St. Vincent Meals on Wheels raised over $150,000 enough to deliver more than 19,000 meals to shut-in L.A. seniors. Our deepest thanks to our chef partners, vintners, spirit makers, sponsors and guests. He s helping to organize a jazz festival in Hungary now. In his 60s, he battled cancer and was offered St. Vincent Meals on Wheels delivery when he left the hospital after treatment; that was 23 years ago. Today he barely gets by on his $900 Social Security income. For years, he subsisted on one meal a day from St. Vincent and one jazz gig a week, Friday night at Callendar s Grill on Wilshire in L.A. Steve calls his meal delivery volunteers my angels. In August, the Los Angeles Times shared Steve s story. Generous people made donations. A friend started a gofundme.com campaign to help. So far enough has been raised to give Steve a cushion. I don t have to worry about every penny now; what a blessing, he said. And when we found out Steve needed more food, we added breakfast and lunch to his daily deliveries. He calls his delivery volunteers my angels and said, I truly appreciate this valuable service, so many people like me depend on it. Arts District Farmer s Market where we gathered #SaveLunch messages from vendors, shoppers and even LAFD firefighters. Our friends at Off the Wall Graffiti pitched in and we collected 154 paper plate messages! We sent these, along with a letter about the importance of Meals on Wheels to seniors, to Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, who sits on the Budget Committee. This is part of a national campaign by Meals on Wheels America to preserve funding in the FY18 federal budget for Older Americans Act programs.
